Can your team successfully play your
game if they don’t know the score?
By John Ruh
You are a leader in your company. You have defined your game and what a successful outcome looks like. Yet you have a problem enrolling the support you need. Could it be because your people don’t know what really is happening within the organization?
Many businesses are reluctant to let people know how the company is doing. This is like going to a Bears’ game where none of the players know the score. What strategy do you use? Run the ball? Go into a prevent defense? Throw a hail Mary? How is the team to know? In the same sense, I observe businesses owners and leaders who are frustrated that employees aren’t providing the support they need. In many cases it is because they don’t know the score.
A Simple Solution To Consider:
Set up effective ways to communicate key facts. One of the easiest, low cost, high value ideas you can implement is to do a monthly 30/30 review either on a companywide or departmental basis. It can be done effectively in an hour. This accomplishes 2 things. One, it keeps everyone involved; two, it allows all team members to share their views, ask questions and feel more a part of the planning process. It’s management’s responsibility to create a system that gives employees a level playing field where they can be successful. Feedback on company successes, challenges, needs and goals is critical to understanding the score so everyone can play your game effectively.
