Powerful Speaking…Does your speaking move the listener?

Powerful Speaking… Does your speaking move the listener?
by John Ruh

Powerful speaking is the art of knowing how to position yourself right, and how to communicate that position to others. Doing this is critically important in sales.

When you meet a new client they have two questions:

  1. Why hire you?
  2. Why hire your firm?

If you do enough introspective work and live in these two questions and if you understand the behavioral style of the person you are speaking to, you can make an impact (and usually a sale). Knowing these 3 things very well makes for powerful speaking.

So what is the action to take?

  1. Spend some time living in the question “why hire you?”
  2. Spend some time really learning “why hire your firm?” Learn what’s unique about your product or service and your culture and how to sell that uniqueness to others.
  3. Understand your own behavioral style and its impact on others, especially on people with styles different than yours. Do a DiSC, Meyers Briggs or similar tool to sharpen your skills in this area so you can recognize behavioral styles quickly.
