Do people who know you consider you cheap? Do you hold this as a badge of honor? If so, you are limiting your success.

Why?

Everybody has a frugal (politically correct word for cheap) side. For the sake of this article let’s call that side, “Mr./Ms. Cheapo.” If Cheapo is making the decisions in your life, you are only looking at the cost side of the equation. This side is very prejudiced, judgmental and limited in what can be seen. Cheapo often can’t see value and misses opportunity because cost is the only thing that is being considered. As my client Joe Incrocci (who is a financial guru) says, “They jump over dollars to save pennies.”

What to do about it:

Don’t let this side of you monopolize your decision making. Access another part of yourself, the wise business leader, who sees the big picture. Let that side of you run the business and only allow Cheapo to speak when all other parts of an opportunity have been thoroughly explored.

How?

Step 1

Get to know Cheapo well.

Step 2

Learn more about the part of you that can make wiser decisions.

Step 3

Start the process of awareness and separation.

We can help.

Sign up for our PPDP program (CLICK HERE for MORE INFORMATION) and take advantage of our offer of one free session. This will allow you to begin the process that all great achievers discover, learning to better manage yourself and capitalize on your strengths (strengths capitalization concept).

P.S. - Our next free workshop featuring Jack Welch’s DVD, which is part of PPDP program will be held on 2/23/12.

Has there ever been a time when what was perfectly clear to you was completely misunderstood by the person to whom you were speaking? Do others appear to understand you and then produce results that are just the opposite of what you had in mind?

Communication is not just in the language we use. Tone of voice, body language and facial expressions can say more than words. When our self-perception is different from how others see us, misunderstandings can occur.

Understanding yourself is the first step to better understanding others. Your DISC profile can help you to see yourself as others see you. It will increase self awareness and make it easier to note changes in other people’s behavior that will alert you to situations of stress, tension or conflict.

Schedule an appointment today to review your DISC profile and reveal your communication style. We are ready to help you. If you or someone you know has never taken the DISC profile, let us know. We will arrange to get an assessment out right away.

We, as leaders, must absolutely, positively create 2012 vision and goals that excite us so we can empower the troops. During this hectic time of year when you are dealing with day-today business issues, enjoying Thanksgiving and Christmas distractions, completing the end of year accounting and more, it may seem like a task that can wait. However, as a leader, this task is critical and it takes time to do it right.

Here is what I’m doing to prepare for the New Year.

Each November I do my annual PPDP (Personal and Professional Development Plan) review of 2011. I get honest, open feedback from my partners. Call or email me if you want a copy of what I sent to them.

Over the Thanksgiving break, I formulate my 2012 PPDP goals. This includes my business goals/plans too.

In December I test the goals to make sure they feel right. I finalize them by 12/31.

In January I blast off…ready to activate the new plan.

This is a process that takes time, (you can’t rush this) but it focuses me and it works (Note: It may also be disruptive to your ego and cause some anxiety. Work through it. It is a great continuous improvement process). I refine it as I go along, examining it during weekly and monthly reviews. It really is quite easy once you get into the habit of doing it.

Question:
I’m curious, what are you doing to prepare for the New Year, and why? Please share your process. If you need support to get things done, call or email us.

P.S. Click Here for your FREE end of year “1, 2, 3 steps” offer on wheel planning process. It all starts with a company wide survey.

Supporting Yourself
by John Ruh

Do you know what your goals are for 2012 and how they fit into your vision?

Do you know why they are important and what values will guide you?

Are you supported properly to achieve them?

I think most people think of support as something that happens to them. I think of it as something that you create. Without the right support, your 2012 vision, mission, goals and values (be they individual, company or departmental) probably will be difficult to achieve. So I want you to think about finding ways to develop the support you want and need to make 2012 a successful year instead of leaving it up to chance.

What Does Supporting Yourself Mean?
Support means different things to different people. It covers any and all things people need to achieve their stated outcomes. It starts with honestly looking at yourself and your situation and doing an assessment so you can see what you need.

What is obvious to most people is that high achievers have clear outcomes that they are focused on reaching. They take responsibility/ownership for these outcomes and are deeply committed to achieving them. What is not so obvious is that they are also skilled at creating the support they need to accomplish that outcome.

My Personal Support
Take a moment and email your thoughts on this to me. If you want, invite me to discuss this topic with you and/or your team and perhaps also view Joel Barker’s video on The Power of Vision. Remember, my purpose is to assist you at creating the support you truly need.

Best of Success in 2012!

I remain committed to supporting your vision, goals, mission and values.

Sincerely,

John Ruh

Is Your Company Ready to Win in 2011?
by John Ruh

Then Train Your Employees To Play According To
YOUR WAY OF DOING BUSINESS

The Warm-up

A bunch of youngsters get together to play baseball. When first told to take the field, the whole group runs out to the pitchers mound and stands there. When they are finally placed in the proper defensive order, the first batter gets up, hits the ball and runs directly to 2nd base. Though this may sound like some of the legendary Cub teams, it’s actually what happened during the first practice when I coached my 6 year olds’ baseball team. I just assumed everyone knew the rules of baseball. They quickly made me realize how wrong I was. At the time I was the owner of 2 growing businesses. This also made me realize I needed to make sure my employees knew the rules of the game in my company. So I customized a program called “Our Way of Doing Business”

Pre-game Preparation

Every new employee is like one of those 6 year olds taking the field. They have no idea of what position you want them to take unless you inform them. So the first thing you must do is write down and communicate “Your Way of Doing Business”

Taking the Field

Once every employee knows exactly what the object of the game is and how they fit in to it, they will be ready to play like a team and take you on to a winning (profitable) season. Even your rookies will contribute consistently!

The Pitch (from John M. Ruh Consulting, Inc.)
Let our seasoned veterans coach you on the how to of developing, writing and communicating “Your Way of Doing Business”. Once you do, your team will know when it’s time to make a sacrifice or go for the extra base and you could be looking at the play-offs or beyond.

Extra Innings

The Impact of Company Culture or
Building Your Foundation
by John Ruh

When constructing a building the first thing you must do is lay a foundation. The strength and quality of this foundation determines how high the building can go and how long it will last. The same is true when growing a business. The foundation of any business is its vision, values, mission and goals. How they are constructed will make a difference in how far your business will grow.

I believe that my strength as a business consultant is my deep understanding and appreciation of the impact that vision and values (commonly called company culture) have on business. This was the driving force that led me to be able to start, grow and sell four successful businesses. I want the opportunity to convey the power of these concepts to you. Learning to harness vision and values to drive your future requires what Eric Hoffer calls, “hard thinking.”

I would like to meet with you to discuss this further. When not done right, mission, vision and values are just words on a piece of paper. When done properly, using these concepts excites people and brings focus and meaning to your work life. They provide a solid foundation upon which your business is built. Once you have this foundation it is easier to create the right strategy, structure and support to make your business grow.

Let’s get together and discuss how I might help you make your foundation stronger.

The boss says,
“You must fit into our culture.”

The employee says,
“I’ll do it! But, uh, what exactly does that mean?”

The boss says,
“Good question. I’m not sure. But that doesn’t mean I don’t expect you do it.”

The #1 problem most business leaders face is that they have not taken the time to clarify the vision, values and rules that make people successful within their organization. The result is that no one knows how to play the game successfully. How can anyone win when no one knows the rules?

John’s Tips

Stop talking culture and start talking about “your way of doing business.” Identify your M.O.’s, put them in writing and train everyone on them.

Put your vision and values into writing so everyone knows
A. Where you are going
B. What you value

Translate those values into expected behavior. For example, if you say teamwork is essential, explain what teamwork looks like at your organization.

Want support on this?
Call or email John now. He will:

Interview you and your key people.

Organize and report his findings

Start the process of clarifying and defining your vision, values, goals and basic M.O. (Your Way of Doing Business.) Result? An opportunity for ordinary people to produce extraordinary results

Not sure how to proceed?
Ask John for a one-time, free, onsite, 55-minute workshop for you and your core team members titled “How to Clarify Our Way of Doing Business.”

The Game
by John Ruh

Scenario 1:
A bunch of 6-year-olds get together to play their first game of baseball. No one knows the rules of the game, how to run bases, get anyone out, what position to play, how to hit the ball, or what to do next if they manage to connect. The coach is going bonkers! What happened? What can he do to get things on track and get sanity back?

Scenario 2:
Sue comes to work for you and has lots of experience in the field. She’s a pro, but not a team player. The first week on the job, she scores some successes, but breaks every rule in your book. She makes end runs around you and procedures and is oblivious to the goals the rest of your team has incorporated. What’s happened here? Do you have resources or tools that will get her to play by the rules? How can you tap her powers, or should she be sent to the showers?

Both stories indicate what happens when people have no clue about the rules of the game or how you play ball. In order to win in business, several things must be in place….

First:
All team members must grasp how the game is played in general.

Second:
Team members must understand how you play the game–your own rules, goals and most important, the corporate core values that define Your Way of Doing Business.

Third:
Players must embrace a vision of what winning means to the organization.

Fourth:
Your coaches (managers) must have tools on hand that help them recruit stars and communicate the game plan.

Successful companies that chalk up winning seasons have all these things in place. Helping you put them in place is where we come in. We can support you at clarifying your vision and core values, get your rules in a row and explain it all in understandable English. Why? So you and your coaches/managers can use these tools to attract talent who can win for you and with you. It’s also critical so managers can “coach” better with players who understand the rules of your game and “how you expect them to act.”
